【Health & Beauty】MAKEUP REMOVER TIPS 101: Choose the Right Makeup Remover for Your Skin

Any guidelines to choose the right makeup remover for your skin? Should I go for texture preference or I have to based on the skin-types?

I would say, go for both considerations!

Oil, milk, balm, micellar water... ... Plenty range of choices in this market for makeup removers, and do you purchase the makeup removers based on how hot the advertisement of the product is or barely purchase from the branded skincare stores?

Tiffany Masterson, the founder of Drunk Elephant, said a very important point:
"They vary by characteristics like how much moisture they deliver to the skin, but those qualities are all secondary to their true differences, which is how the mechanisms they use (work) to actually clean skin,”
Masterson also classified these into three categories according to surfactants, or the class of ingredients that clean skin:
  1. No surfactant (oil and balm ([creamy] cleansers)
  2. low surfactant (cleansing milk and micellar water)
  3. traditional surfactant-based removers (lathering cleansers)

Lets's look at the texture of the makeup remover and consider your preference:

CREAMY (BALM)
Creamy makeup remover is the first choice for people with sensitive skin, such as cleansing milk. The creamy and richer texture can breakdown to remove the makeup and it doesn't require to wipe anything on or off the skin which prevents it from getting irritated.

*Cleansing milk helps to gently remove light makeup, such as sunscreen.

FOAM
Foam formation makeup remover plays 2 roles here --- makeup remover and cleanser; it restores moisture to the skin. One must-do-action by using foaming formula remover is gently massaging your face while cleansing.

However, the forming texture remover is avoided to be used on stubborn makeup around the eyes, as the skin around the eyes is very sensitive, foam remover easily gets into the eyes and you are likely to have to scrub (and massage) to get the makeup off.

OIL-FREE
If you have pores or ance, perhaps oil-free makeup remover is one of the best recommendations as it reduces the chance of clogging up the pores; it provides gentle texture but it required to wipe down your face 2-3 times.

OIL-BASED
It is very recommended to stubborn makeup, such as mascara, eyeliner, and lipsticks where it tends to be waterproof; oil-based makeup remover that emulsifiers with water to gently melt and dissolve the makeup more quickly while nourishing the skin.

MICELLAR WATER
This non-foaming texture remover that uses water mixed with minerals; the chemical composition in the micellar water that attract dirt particles and draw out the impurities without drying the skin. If you want to use micellar water to wipe off the waterproof makeup, it has to wipe 2-3 times to get all of that off. Some micellar water consists tiny of oil molecules suspended in soft water.

this remover is relatively fuss-free as they don't need to be rinsed off with water; besides, micellar water does not strip of disrupt the natural lipids and other protector substance produced by the skin, as well as will moisturize and regulate oil production on the skin, so they are recommended for dry and oily skin types.

SAY NO TO THESE MAKEUP REMOVERS

Alcohol-based removers / drying alcohol ingredients
Actually, many makeup removers include alcohol as one of the main ingredients because alcohol can easily break down the tough chemical composition of a lot of makeup.  But long-termly exposure to the skin to alcohol-based removers can cause skin damages.

Makeup removers with fragrance
Fragrances can actually irritate the skin, especially sensitive skin, or if you have ance. It is alright to use remover with fragrance if you don't have sensitive skin, however, the purer the composition of the makeup remover, the better. To be honest, fragrances are just a marketing trick to attract more customers buying.

Also, essential oils and harsh surfactants like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)*, which can cause inflammation in the skin that can lead to imbalanced oil production, androgens, chronic dry skin (inability of the skin to maintain it's moisturizing level)

*It is a harsh surfactant - alkaline pH level >8.0; milder surfactants with pH closer to the skin (pH level <6.0)

TIPS 101:
The choice of makeup remover products really depends on the texture preference, but if you want to pick a remover based on the skin-type, perhaps the general guide could help:

Oily skin: Micellar water, cleansing oil
Normal skin: All types, depending on your preference
Dry skin: The cleansing balm, cleansing milk, cleansing oil
Sensitive skin: Cleansing milk, cleansing balm
