"Writing letters to myself" is something I did a long time ago, and although I don't remember if I wrote to my past self or had visions for the future, each act of "writing letters" gives me a strong sense of momentum, especially as the earth completes another orbit around the sun, I'll be bidding farewell to the '20s. I recall the song "Letter: Greetings to a 15-Year-Old" by the Japanese-Italian singer Angela Aki, as I often play this song whenever I write letters to myself. The melody of this song instantly evokes reflections, gratitude, and appreciation.
Thinking about integrating literature into counselling, I believe it must be a delightful experience for individuals of all ages who appreciate words, as the power of words beyond language; it is a form of imagery, a mood, and an art form. Writing letters to one's past or future self is the most approachable way. Using "letter writing" as a creative intervention in counselling, especially assigning it as homework after a session, can prompt individuals to contemplate their life experiences, thereby enhancing self-awareness and self-understanding, eventually uncovering psychological flexibility.
